Audition Notice for SECONDARY: THE MUSICAL (2026)

Checkpoint Theatre is holding auditions for the 2026 restaging of Secondary: The Musical.

Written and composed by weish, and directed by Huzir Sulaiman, Secondary: The Musical exposes the day-to-day lives of real people – both teachers and students – as well as explores the truths underlying our education system. Named Production of the Year at the 2025 ST Life Theatre Awards, this landmark work by Checkpoint Theatre dives into life in a Singapore school, with all its delicate joys, complicated heartbreak and unexpected beauty.

Actors should have the ability to deliver nuanced and naturalistic performances, speaking complex text in English and Singlish. They should have a comfort with and aptitude for contemporary physical and vocal performance techniques.

Actors must be able to commit to the following dates:

REHEARSALS: Mon 23 Feb 2026 — Fri 03 Apr 2026

PRODUCTION: Sat 04 Apr 2026 — Sun 26 April 2026

We are looking to cast actors for the following roles:

– OMAR, Malay, Secondary 3 student. Boisterous, endlessly creative class clown with a challenging family situation. Must be able to rap and sing and be very comfortable speaking colloquially.

– ENSEMBLE, age, gender, and ethnicity open – two performers needed to play student, teacher and staff roles. The Ensemble morphs into multiple roles throughout the musical and are the spine of the show. Must be able to sing and dance.

We are also looking to cast understudies for the following roles; all understudies (except Lilin) will be expected to learn their assigned main role AND at least one ensemble member role:

– OMAR

– REYANSH, Indian, Secondary 3 student. Goody-two-shoes, sincere to a fault. Loves maths. Fiercely loyal to his friends. Must be able to rap and sing.

– CHARLIE, Maths teacher, in his 30s to 40s. A funny guy and a true friend. Has learned to draw boundaries in order to survive as a teacher. Must be able to sing and be very comfortable speaking colloquially.

– MANDY, Humanities HOD, in her late 30s to 60s. A leader whose hands are tied by an unyielding system. Must be able to sing.

– MING, Chinese, Secondary 3 student. Hyper intelligent misfit. Intimidating but with a tender side, with a challenging family situation. Must be able to rap and sing and be very comfortable speaking colloquially.

– LILIN, Literature teacher, in her mid 20s to early 30s. Passionate teacher a few years into service. Earnest but flawed. Code-switches easily. Must be able to sing and be very comfortable speaking colloquially.
