Programmes & Workshops

Checkpoint Theatre runs talks, workshops, and masterclasses for theatre-goers and practitioners at various levels. We offer a wide range of programmes under the National Arts Council-Arts Education Programme (NAC-AEP). Our Joint Artistic Directors and Associate Artists are also regularly invited by schools and non-government organisations to share their expertise.

Checkpoint Theatre offers a wide array of programmes as part of the NAC-AEP 2019/2020 cycle.

(1) Dramatised readings of play extracts

Get a taste of the following critically-acclaimed plays in a stripped-down reading by professional actors and a director. A great introduction for students to the theatre experience, each programme is wrapped up with a post-reading dialogue with the creative team:

  • Normal by Faith Ng
  • Occupation by Huzir Sulaiman
  • Recalling Mother by Claire Wong and Noorlinah Mohamed
  • The Heart Comes to Mind by Lucas Ho
  • Keluarga Besar En. Karim (The Karims) by Adib Kosnan
  • A Grand Design by Cheyenne Alexandria Phillips
  • Vulnerable by Cheyenne Alexandria Phillips
  • A Good Death by Faith Ng

(2) Workshops

Eye-opening and impactful, these workshops expose students to the rigorous craftsmanship behind writing, directing, and performing in a play:

  • Devising Workshop
  • Dramatic Writing
  • From Page to Stage: How to Analyse a Script

Our masterclasses offer personal guidance and practical tools for every aspect of theatre craft.  In-depth and comprehensive, they are dedicated to providing the space, support and skills needed to create the plays that are honest and important to you. Past programmes include Huzir Sulaiman’s Playwriting Masterclass, a rigorous six-week course designed to take writers through the delicate process of playwriting.

From our Process Insight Talks to the Checkpoint Conversations series, we cater to both experienced theatre-makers and eager enthusiasts by shedding light on the intricacies and thought processes involved in art-making.

We organise and conduct workshops that cover all aspects of theatre-making, including writing, acting and directing. If you would like us to tailor a workshop for you, please drop us an enquiry in the form below.
