Notice: The Heart Comes to Mind will be presented as an audio experience as part of Esplanade’s The Studios Online season from 6 – 12 June 2020. Right before Circuit Breaker measures put a premature end to filming the performance on video, this audio recording was captured, a historic piece of art-making amidst a pandemic.
Visceral and heartfelt, The Heart Comes to Mind is a timely exploration of the shifting currents between father and daughter which pulls us in to reexamine relationships with those closest to us. Featuring an original soundtrack by Shah Tahir and Ryan Sim that intermingles with and elevates the poetic lyricism of the play, this is an auditory experience unlike anything Checkpoint Theatre has produced before.
An online post-show dialogue session moderated by Huzir Sulaiman will be conducted on Sun 7 June, 4.30pm with Claire Wong, Julius Foo and Oon Shu An. More details to follow.
When life sends family members towards separate trajectories, what keeps us bound together?
Poignant and compelling, The Heart Comes to Mind explores the relationship between an ageing writer and his scientist daughter. As they each wrestle with the loss of their wife and mother, each comes to contemplate personal failures and relational shortcomings within their family. What private pain do we carry? Can we forgive each other? How does the heart make sense of what the mind cannot forget?
Lucas Ho’s new play is a visceral yet heartfelt exploration of the private struggles between a father and a daughter. We spin away and apart—sometimes, the journey home is an unstoppable collision course.
The Heart Comes to Mind is a co-production with Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, presented as part of The Studios Online season.
