Recalling Mother (2016, Brisbane)
Long-time friends Claire Wong and Noorlinah Mohamed would often talk about their mothers and the complexities of living – and not living – with them. One mother is Cantonese-speaking and impetuous; the other speaks Malay and is quietly stubborn. Both are wonderful cooks.
Since it began in 2006, Recalling Mother has evolved as a living work over six different productions with Claire and Noorlinah continually revisiting and revising the show; as themselves and their mothers grow older, new stories are added, while stories they were not yet ready to tell are now told in full.
Poignant and funny, Recalling Mother celebrates the joys and challenges of motherhood and daughterhood. Though remaining an intimately Singaporean work, Recalling Mother has touched the lives of audiences both local and abroad, and was warmly received in Brisbane Festival 2016.
