Thank you for spending your time with us today
Checkpoint Theatre is proud to introduce you to our company and our slate of original Singapore stories. We hope you find the same joy, solace and magic in them, as we do.
The Home of New Singapore Playwriting
Established in 2002, Checkpoint Theatre is a company of multi-disciplinary storytellers. We focus on creating and presenting original Singapore content with strong writing, performance and direction, across different media, disciplines and platforms.
With honesty and humour, head and heart, we produce and develop vibrant and important contemporary Asian stories that connect with, challenge, and inspire both local and international audiences. We are the home of new Singapore playwriting, and we nurture the next generation of Singapore theatre-makers and creatives.

What We Do
- We create and present new theatrical and inter-disciplinary work with honesty, depth, and nuance.
- We develop original Singapore stories with outstanding writing through our process of rigorous dramaturgy and incisive direction.
- We mentor emerging theatre-makers and creatives through workshops, internships and collaborations, and through providing professional resources and platforms to showcase new work.
- We publish anthologies of original works written by Singapore storytellers and books on theatre and art-making.
- We pursue collaborations with international partners to show Singapore work abroad.
A New Way Forward
These recent years have been an instrumental turning point for Checkpoint Theatre’s new focus as Singapore storytellers across different disciplines, platforms, and media. The pandemic has hit us financially, but has also elevated our creativity in finding new ways to reach our audiences — whether through live performances, video and audio experiences, or even comic books. Even as we celebrated our 20th anniversary in 2022, we hope to continue fulfilling our mission of bringing original Singapore works to you.
Checkpoint Theatre has pivoted in the pandemic like no other theatre company has. It has ventured into audio experiences, digital concerts and comic book publication. And it remains a strong supporter of original Singapore writing even in difficult times.

Original Singapore Stories
Whenever audiences watch a Checkpoint Theatre production, they’ll say, “That’s very Checkpoint.” What does that mean? Over the years, I’ve come to realise that it stands for our focus on original Singapore writing, on our emphasis on having diverse voices share their world views, and most of all, no matter the story, our desire for audiences to feel seen, heard, and a little less alone. We can’t, and we won’t stop doing all of that, and we hope you’ll join us in continuing this mission of telling original Singapore stories for these times, and about these times.
