Checkpoint Theatre is excited to hold auditions for two brand new works which will be staged as part of our 2024 Season:
- SECONDARY THE MUSICAL, a new musical written and composed by Associate Artist weish, directed by Huzir Sulaiman
- PLAYING WITH FIRE, a new play written by Associate Artist Cheyenne Alexandria Phillips, directed by Claire Wong
Requirements:
Actors should have the ability to deliver nuanced and naturalistic performances, speaking complex text in English and Singlish. They should have a comfort with and aptitude for contemporary physical and vocal performance techniques.
We are looking to cast actors for the following roles.
- SECONDARY THE MUSICAL by weish, directed by Huzir Sulaiman
In this musical, weish combines true stories from the teaching service with a unique songwriting style that is at once ancient and contemporary, haunting yet playful. Spanning the naturalistic and the absurd, these hilarious and heartbreaking stories expose the day-to-day lives of real people – both teachers and students – as well as explore the truths underlying our education system.
(1A) L., Literature teacher, in her late 20s to early 30s. Passionate teacher a few years into service. Earnest but flawed. Code-switches easily. Must be able to sing and be very comfortable speaking colloquially.
(1B) C., Math teacher, in his 30s to 40s. A funny guy and a true friend. Has learned to draw boundaries in order to survive as a teacher. Must be able to sing and be very comfortable speaking colloquially.
(1C) M., Humanities HOD, in her late 30s to 60s. A leader whose hands are tied by an unyielding system. Must be able to sing.
(1D) MING, Chinese, Secondary 3 student. Hyper intelligent ah lian. Misfit. Intimidating but with a tender side, with a challenging family situation. Must be able to rap and sing and be very comfortable speaking colloquially.
(1E) OMAR, Malay, Secondary 3 student. Boisterous, endlessly creative class clown with a challenging family situation. Must be able to rap and sing and be very comfortable speaking colloquially.
(1F) REYANSH, Indian, Secondary 3 student. Goody-two-shoes, sincere to a fault. Loves maths. Fiercely loyal to his friends. Must be able to rap and sing.
(1G) ENSEMBLE, age, gender, and ethnicity open – Five performers needed to play student, teacher and staff roles. The Ensemble morphs into multiple roles throughout the musical and are the spine of the show. Must be able to sing and dance.
[Note that all auditionees for characters 1A – 1F will automatically also be considered for the ENSEMBLE.]
- PLAYING WITH FIRE by Cheyenne Alexandria Phillips, directed by Claire Wong
This play follows a spirited young theatre-maker as she interviews employees in the Oil and Gas industry. As she delves deeper into their personal stories, she is called to confront her own family history intertwined with Singapore’s dependence on oil.
(2A) INTERVIEWER, in her mid to late 20s, Eurasian. Youthful, spirited, naive theatre-maker. Has never worked in the Oil and Gas Industry.
(2B) RETIRED MANAGER, in her 60s. Grew up English-educated in the 1970s. Very proud of her career and her accomplishments. Retired but still loyal to the Oil and Gas Industry. Any ethnicity.
(2C) TECHNICIAN, working on the ground, in his 50s. Loving husband and father to three, with a diploma-level education. Warm, compassionate and endearing. Any ethnicity.
(2D) PROCESS ENGINEER, a newbie to the industry, in her mid to late 20s. Was in university with INTERVIEWER. Ambitious, idealistic and determined; looking to climb the corporate ladder. Any ethnicity.
(2E) MID-CAREER PROFESSIONAL, in his late 30s or early 40s, of Indian descent. Proud individual. Can be defensive of his position, and often takes his frustration out on new technology.
(2F) Interviewer’s MOTHER, in her 60s, Eurasian. Caring, affectionate and firm.

- Two short monologues (Singapore texts preferred) – each monologue should be under three minutes in length; one serious, and the other comedic
- Two songs (for those auditioning for the musical) – one musical theatre song and one non-musical theatre song in a genre of your choice (e.g. Pop, Folk, RnB, Hip Hop, etc. to showcase your versatility). Each song should be under three minutes in length
