What happens when Malaysia decides to build an atomic bomb?

Checkpoint Theatre proudly and delightedly presents a brand new production of the much-loved and often requested comedy, the explosively funny Atomic Jaya.

The physicist, Dr Mary Yuen, is surreptitiously enlisted into a top secret national project to build the region’s first atomic bomb. As she gets drawn deeper and deeper into the ambitious scheme, she meets a madcap assortment of characters: from uranium smugglers to cabinet ministers, a canteen lady who makes very special teh tarik to a certain army general with a Napoleonic fixation. The plot twists, turns and thickens, and Dr Yuen find herself swept from one hilarious situation to another, while she grapples with a growing moral dilemma. Deliciously cheeky and laugh-a-minute funny, Atomic Jaya is utterly enjoyable.

From its first staging in 1998, audiences immediately fell in love with Atomic Jaya and its zany cast of 16 characters. Written by the award-winning playwright Huzir Sulaiman, with his inimitable razor sharp wit, the play continues to win new audiences with every fresh staging and has become a beloved Asian classic satire.

Checkpoint Theatre’s 15th anniversary production of Atomic Jaya promises to be an explosively hilarious theatrical experience with virtuoso acting by two of Singapore’s finest actresses, Karen Tan and Claire Wong, taking on all 16 roles.

For Better or For Worse traces the love-hate marriage of middle-aged couple Gerald and Swen. Set against the backdrop of everyday life in modern Singapore, the play is poignant and provocative at every turn. For Better or For Worse makes you laugh, even as it tears apart notions of romantic love while compelling you to embrace the tedium and wonder, and the joys and pains, of marriage.

What is this thing called love? Will “I do” lead to a dead end or a glorious future? What does it take to keep a marriage going? Join Gerald and Swen as they realise they are hopelessly yet passionately bound by their marriage vows: to depend on each other no matter what, till death do they part.

For Better or For Worse is acclaimed playwright Faith Ng’s newest full length play, following the success of her debut play wo(men) which garnered her a Best Original Script nomination at the Life! Theatre Awards. In For Better or For Worse, Faith again captures a slice of Singaporean life in her inimitable style that is both crafted yet raw and authentic. She has created utterly believable and thoroughly Singaporean characters who are complex, compelling and colourful.

Directed by Claire Wong (who recently directed Checkpoint Theatre’s acclaimed production of Occupation), For Better or For Worse is a powerful and moving account of the ups and downs of love and marriage, and of staying together through the uncertainties of life.
