Associate Artists

Launched in 2013, our Associate Artists’ Scheme nurtures new theatrical talent by forging a close relationship with young artists and taking them through the creative process of theatre-making with thoughtful and rigorous mentorship. The inaugural group of Associate Artists, comprising Lucas Ho, Faith Ng, Joel Tan, and Shiv Tandan, had dramatised readings at The Arts House Play Den to showcase their works-in-progress. Two of the plays presented at the December 2013 session have since undergone further development and given a full presentation – The Way We Go (November 2014) and Normal (April 2015).

2014 saw the addition of Oon Shu An as an Associate Artist and her debut full-length play #UnicornMoment under the co-direction of Huzir and Shiv. This was complemented by our second main season production The Way We Go, written by Joel. Off-stage, our Associate Artists were involved in a wide spectrum of company activities. Lucas served as Editor for our third publication This Is My Family: New Singapore Plays Volume 2 while Shiv represented Checkpoint Theatre in an eight-month collaboration with Griffin Theatre (Sydney) for a Google-backed project on theatre and the internet.

Joel, Lucas, and Shiv also worked with the Year 3s at SOTA in a directorial capacity on the readings of the students’ plays written under Huzir’s tutelage. The year was then drawn to a close with a hugely successful playwriting workshop for youths led by Faith, Joel, and Lucas.

We look forward to continuing our commitment to nurturing Singapore’s new generation of theatre practitioners and providing our Associate Artists a platform for their artistic growth in 2015.
